Equipment

  • 1 baking dish greased
  • 1 skillet
  • 1 mixing bowl

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
  • 2 cups shredded cabbage
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional Add-ins

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 1/2 cup cooked bacon bits

Instructions

Preparation

  • Wash and peel the potatoes, then slice them thinly. Shred the cabbage and, if using, chop the onions finely. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat and cook the cabbage until it begins to soften, about 5 minutes. Set aside.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F. In a greased baking dish, layer the potatoes first, followed by cabbage and a sprinkle of cheddar cheese. Repeat the layers, finishing with a generous topping of cheese.
  • Pour the heavy cream evenly over the top of the layered ingredients. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to achieve a golden, bubbly crust.

Serving

  • Allow the gratin to rest for 5-10 minutes after removing it from the oven. This helps the flavors meld together and makes serving easier.

Storage

  • Store any leftover gratin in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for about 20 minutes, covered with foil to maintain moisture.
