Equipment

  • 1 9x13 inch baking dish greased
  • 1 mixing bowl large
  • 1 whisk

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 loaf day-old bread challah or brioche, cubed
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Optional Add-Ins

  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup fresh berries
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

Preparation

  • Cut the day-old bread into 1-inch cubes and place them in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Ensure the bread is evenly distributed.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined and smooth.
  • Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are coated. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the custard.
  • Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
  • Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Uncover the casserole and bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the casserole to cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup if desired.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
