Equipment

  • 1 9x13 inch baking dish greased
  • 1 knife
  • 1 cutting board

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of cabbage thinly sliced
  • 3 large potatoes thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Sauce

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Preparation

  • Wash and peel the potatoes, then slice them thinly. Core the cabbage and slice it into thin strips. Set them aside while you prepare the sauce.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Cook until thickened, then stir in salt, pepper, and half of the cheddar cheese.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F. In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the potatoes, then half of the cabbage. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the layer and sprinkle with some mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 20 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.

Serving

  • Allow the baked gratin to cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm as a comforting main course or as a hearty side dish.

Storage

  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
